Allo scopo di rilanciare la serie TV, nel 1981 Yoshiyuki Tomino e Yoshikazu Yasuhiko la ripresero traendone tre lungometraggi: Mobile Suit Gundam e Mobile Suit Gundam II: Senshi hen, distribuiti nel 1981, e Mobile Suit Gundam III: Meguriai uchū hen, proiettato nel 1982. Ognuno dei tre film ripercorre in ordine cronologico una parte della serie TV ed è composto soprattutto da animazioni tratte dalla stessa, anche se Tomino e Yasuhiko ritennero che alcune cose potevano essere migliorate. Furono così modificati diversi aspetti della sceneggiatura, ritenuti poco realistici e più adatti a una serie di super robot. Il G-Armor, ad esempio, viene completamente eliminato e rimpiazzato dai più realistici caccia di supporto Core Booster; nella tappa a Jaburo, ad Hayato viene fatto assegnare un Guncannon per sostituire il Guntank, che è un mezzo da combattimento terrestre; nel terzo film, infine, vennero aggiunte diverse nuove scene sulle battaglie di Solomon e di A Baoa Qu.
TramaA causa della sovrappopolazione della Terra, da oltre mezzo secolo l'umanità aveva ormai iniziato un programma di migrazione nello spazio. Attorno al pianeta orbitavano alcune centinaia di colonie spaziali a forma di giganteschi cilindri, le cui pareti interne venivano utilizzate dalla popolazione, come suolo artificiale. In queste seconde patrie le genti procreavano, allevavano le future generazioni e morivano. Nell'anno 0079 dell'Era Spaziale, Side 3, la colonna spaziale più lontana dalla terra, si proclamò Principato di Zeon, dando inizio a una guerra d'indipendenza. Dopo solo un mese di conflitto, le truppe di Zeon e l'esercito federale avevano sterminato circa la metà della popolazione totale. Gli uomini cominciarono a temere l'effetto delle proprie azioni. Si giunse così a una situazione di stallo, che perdurava da poco più di 8 mesi.
