Giappone, 21 settembre 1945. Alla stazione di Kobe, il quattordicenne Seita more di inedia. Il suo fantasma ripercorre i tragici eventi degli ultimi quattro mesi: i bombardamenti americani, il cadavere della madre sfigurato dalle ustioni, il padre a difendere la gloria dell'Impero nella sua bianca uniforme da ufficiale di marina. Seita e la sorellina Setsuko soli contro il mondo impazzito. E poi la paura, la mancanza di soldi, i furti, la fame. Questa notte spaventosa è rischiarata dai bagliori delle lucciole. Ma all'alba non ne rimarrà più nessuna...
