Un assolutamente inatteso intoppo burocratico porta all'annullamento di un esame di maturità sostenuto vent'anni prima. E così Giorgio, Lorenzo, Piero, Luisa, Virgilio, Francesca, che oggi hanno le loro vite di quasi quarantenni, si ritrovano riuniti loro malgrado per sostenere di nuovo la prova finale. La situazione, paradossale, li riporterà al periodo in cui erano un gruppo di amici, rivivendone le emozioni e compiendo gli inevitabili e necessari confronti.
