Un piccolo bungalow nella zona settentrionale della California rappresenta per Kathy Lazaro l'ultimo lembo di speranza cui aggrapparsi per ricostruire una vita quasi distrutta. Quando per un errore burocratico viene sfrattata, la casa viene acquistata da Massoud Amir Behrani, un emigrato iraniano che vede così realizzato il suo sogno americano.
