Antonio Salieri, ex musicista di corte dell'imperatore Giuseppe II, rievoca ad un giovane prete, nel manicomio in cui è rinchiuso, il suo rapporto con Mozart. Per punire Dio del genio concesso ad uno "scostumato" come il giovane salisburghese e non a lui stesso, Salieri medita di rovinarlo e di carpirgli la gloria attribuendosi l'ultimo "Requiem" che Mozart non riesce a terminare prima della morte.
