Il film narra la saga della famiglia Essenbeck, proprietaria di grandi acciaierie, alla vigilia della presa del potere dei nazisti in Germania. Il vecchio Joachim è intenzionato a passare la mano ai figli tra cui ci sono fautori e oppositori di Hitler. Tra i parenti più stretti c'è anche un simpatizzante delle Ss che approfitta della situazione per sbarazzarsi con la violenza dei suoi avversari all'interno della famiglia.
