A Roma un giovane scrittore americano, Sam Dalmas, assiste all'accoltellamento di una donna. Saputo che forse si tratta di un serial killer che ha già tre omicidi alle spalle, Sam inizia indagini personali. L'assassino lo prende di mira: in extremis la polizia salva Giulia, la ragazza di Sam; quando poi lo scrittore-detective sembra aver risolto il caso, non manca una sorpresa finale mozzafiato.
