Orfano di madre, figlio di un ricco medico di Ginevra e appassionato di ricerche scientifiche, Victor Frankenstein studia medicina e si occupa dei misteri della vita umana. Impianta quindi un sofisticato laboratorio e mette a punto una Creatura vivente assemblando parti di cadaveri. Branagh non ha puntato sull'horror, ma sul melodramma dove la passione per la donna si mescola con quella, ancor più totalizzante, per il sapere, il potere della scienza, l'esaltazione della creazione.
