Dieci anni dopo il fortunatissimo musical teatrale, Forman porta sullo schermo il musical di Gerome Ragni, James Rado e Galt NacDermot, manifesto del ribellismo giovanile. Ma l'atmosfera hippy era già il passato, e il film è commemorativo e quasi commovente. Celeberrime le canzoni, tra cui "Aquarius" e "Let the Sunshine", che commenta la tragica morte dell'amico partito in guerra per errore, e la triste fine simbolica della gioventù americana nel Vietnam.
