Nel 1885, il giornalista-avvocato statunitense William Walker mette insieme un manipolo di armati che si autobattezzano "Gli Immortali", e con i soldi del banchiere yankee Vanderbilt va in Nicaragua per sostenere il dittatore del momento. Walker è però un reazionario idealista, litiga con Vanderbilt e assume direttamente il potere, scatenando un putiferio. Sembra un romanzo ma è storia, che illumina anche l'attualità dei rapporti tra America del Nord e del Centro-Sud.
