Incaricato da Elaine Sampson, su consiglio dell'avvocato Graves, di indagare sulla scomparsa del ricco marito, il detective Lew Harper (Newman) incomincia a scavare tra le amicizie dell'uomo. Le indagini però non danno alcun esito anzi, spesso Harper si caccia in brutte situazioni, dalle quali lo salva il provvidenziale arrivo di Graves.
