Mark Tackeray (Poitier), un "coloured" laureato in ingegneria elettronica, accetta di insegnare in una scuola londinese frequentata da ragazzi turbolenti e ribelli. Sapendo che altri prima di lui hanno fallito, Mark decide di non dimostrarsi troppo rigido, ma cerca di conquistarsi il rispetto e la collaborazione degli studenti agganciando le sue lezioni alla realtà quotidiana. Pur tra mille difficoltà, riesce a suscitare negli allievi il senso di dignità per loro stessi e per gli altri.
