La famiglia Griswold decide di recarsi in vacanza nel lontanissimo parco dei divertimenti di Valley World. Durante il viaggio ogni sorta di intoppo turba la serenità delle ferie. Quando poi arrivano al parco, scoprono che è chiuso per lavori. Il capofamiglia, armi in pugno, si fa aprire dagli stralunati guardiani e riesce poi a evitare i rigori della legge grazie alla sua abilità oratoria.
