Milano, dal 18 al 22 marzo del 1848: Cainazzo è un ladruncolo che rimane coinvolto per caso nell'insurrezione, così come il fornaio Romolo. I due diventano amici durante la costruzione delle barricate, gli attacchi dei rivoltosi e le rappresaglie degli asburgici. Romolo però, quando scoppiano i festeggiamenti per la vittoria, interviene a fermare le violenze di un rivoluzionario, segnando così il proprio destino.
