L'investigatore privato Marlowe (Gould) non crede che il suo amico Lennox, imputato di uxoricidio, si sia suicidato in Messico e inizia perciò un'indagine personale che si rivela però ben presto tortuosa e pericolosa. Un pericoloso bandito inoltre lo bracca, convinto che Lennox gli abbia affidato una grossa somma. Non mancano scoperte inquietanti tra cui l'esistenza di un triangolo amoroso in cui era coinvolta la moglie di Lennox. Finale con doppio colpo di scena.
