Il chitarrista rock Dewey Finn, polemico e irriverente verso il sistema, vuole vincere a tutti i costi un concorso locale con la sua band; ma quest'ultima, stufa del suo atteggiamento, lo licenzia. Disperato e al verde, Dewey risponde a una telefonata diretta al suo convivente Ned e accetta una supplenza in una prestigiosa scuola elementare, diretta da una preside severissima.
