Nino, emigrato in Svizzera, riesce ad ottenere un contratto trimestrale come cameriere in un ristorante, ma viene licenziato e privato del permesso di soggiorno. Nino invece di tornare in Italia si rifugia in casa di Elena un esule greca. Espatriato come lui ma per ragioni fiscali, un industriale italiano lo assume al suo servizio. Costui, abbbandonato dalla moglie e in piena crisi finanziaria si uccide dopo aver sottratto a Nino tutti i suoi risparmi. A questo punto l'ex cameriere si unisce a un gruppo di napoletani che per mestiere sgozzano galline e vivono in un pollaio.
