Nell'estate del '62 Jack, Matt e Leroy sono giovani, spensierati e assolutamente pazzi per il surf. La loro vita trascorre prevalentemente sulla spiaggia in attesa della "grande onda" grazie a cui dimostrare il proprio valore. Poi arriva il Vietnam. Jack passa tre anni nell'inferno della guerra. Gli altri due riescono a evitare il fronte. Nella primavera del 1974, in occasione di una violenta mareggiata, i tre si ritrovano di nuovo sulla spiaggia. La vita li ha cambiati e la loro amicizia è ormai esaurita. Ma tutti ancora innamorati delle tavole da surf aspettano, forse per l'ultima volta, la grande onda che è in arrivo.
