Il giovane Sean (Josh Hutcherson) capta un segnale che proviene da un'isola disabitata alquanto misteriosa. Poiché non riesce a distoglierlo dall'idea di precipitarsi sul posto, il patrigno (Dwayne Johnson) lo segue nel viaggio, insieme a un pilota d'elicottero (Luis Guzmán) con appresso la sua bella figliola (Vanessa Hudgens). Una volta giunti sull'isola, i quattro si ritrovano circondati da strane forme di vita, montagne d'oro e vulcani ancora in attività, scoprendo di dover mettersi in salvo prima che un'onda sismica faccia inabissare l'isola con tutti i suoi tesori.
